Upcycled Cutting Board With
Hand Painted Sunflowers.
Hand painting sunflowers on thrifted items is one of my favorite things to do. Upcycling this hand painted decor is something I love.
In the Beginner’s Painting Club in August we learned how to paint and draw sunflowers and boy was it fun, But of course I had to take it one step further. Maybe two or three steps.
I painted a vase, 2 candlesticks, a cutting board and 3 8″ x 8″ paintings. Painting in a series really helps me hone my skills and improve my art. I think it’s an excellent way for beginners to really move the needle of their art journey. That’s when you really start improving when you paint a similar subject multiple times.
In my weekly newsletter last week, one of the things I shared was my thrift store decor that I painted using the very same techniques I taught in the Beginner’s Painting Club. Click HERE if you missed it last week.
This weeks Project
This week I upcycled a thrifted cutting board for my daughter, the chef, to use in her Farmer’s Market booth and then later in her home. Click that big beautiful button to see the process.
.Upcycling hand painted decor is always fun regardless of the item or what I’m painting on it.
Acrylic Paint Works on Just About Anything
One of the many things I love about working in acrylic paint is you can paint on just about anything: wood, canvas, glass metal, plastic, fabric and on and on. I love painting actual paintings but I also love thrifting items I can paint on and turning them into fabulous home decor with the skills I’ve learned over the last 22 years.
Here’s the cutting board I painted for my daughter.
I believe I paid $2.99 for the board at a Goodwill store.
In the video description I put a list of all the products I used if you’re looking for paints or brushes.
I also painted these three 8″ x 8″ paintings on canvas panels. These would make great gifts for friends or family or hostess gifts. The process was exactly the same as the one in the Beginner’s Painting Club below.
This is the painting we did in the Beginner’s Painting Club this month.
I love painting blue glass jars. What about you?
Because blue/green and yellow/orange are opposite on the color wheel, it makes this really pop. I’m always checking with my color wheel to make sure what I’m thinking of working in is a really good combination, especially for the main colors. You can add other smaller amounts of just about any color, but your primary focus should be very well thought out.

I shot well over an hour of footage for the video of the upcycled cutting board with hand painted sunflowers. Then I had the bright idea to make it a YouTube short, which is under 60 seconds. But I think the short came out pretty good. If you like it, please gimme a thumbs up and comment on what you thought.
If you would like to see more blog posts and videos like this, I would love to know because I love doing it. I’m always on the hunt for fun things to paint.

I hope this is helpful for you on your art journey. Let me just end with, you will never know it all. There is always something new to learn so never get discouraged that you’re too old to learn to paint, or you have no talent. Painting is a skill and you can learn a skill, you can practice a skill and you can improve on a skill.
Have a fabulous day and let’s paint together soon.
