Painting a Blue Glass Jar with White Daisies

This is a short demo

Paint A Blue Glass Jar with White Daisies

Daisy Commission

Last year I did a 16″ x 20″ painting of blue jars with white daisies in them.  The owner called me a week or two ago and wanted 2 companion pieces to go with it.

I thought these 16″ x 8″ stretched canvases would work better than my original idea of 10″ x 8″ so we agreed on the size.

I’m not a very symmetrical person but I get that many people are.  You can never really produce 2 paintings that are exactly alike, similar, but not exact, so we went with one with the jar mostly seen and the the other with jar completely seen sitting on a table.  The original painting had just the top 1/3 of the jar exposed.  These three should look pretty stunning when hanging together.

Watch the video as one of them is created.

In order to create depth in anything you have to use values of varying shades.  Even though the daisies are white, they cannot be painted all white.  If they were, there would be no depth in the flowers.  They would be white blobs.  Before I learned this I painted lots of white blobs.

Most of these started out with a very light green petals in the background and a few had very light lavender background petals.  As the petals come closer they get lighter and shorter.

Creating depth in artwork can be so frustrating but it is absolutely critical if you want your artwork to have any type of realism in it.

I have created a FREE Printable workbook on achieving perspective.  If you’re an artist who is struggling with creating depth, this workbook could be just the ticket.  Click that big beautiful button to get yours.

My goal is to help 1000 beginning artists learn to paint using fundamentals, elements of art and tutorials so that they can move their artwork to the next level.  I’d love to have you along on that journey.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.  It means the world to me to have you here.  If this was helpful, how about sharing with someone who would also love to learn to paint.

XO,

Sharon
