Easy Peony Painting For Beginners

As a certified florist for more than 35 years, I love painting flowers but I remember how hard they were for me to paint in the beginning.

This easy peony painting for beginners could also be a rose.  Peonies and roses have some similarities that can make them equally hard to paint.  This short video gives you a place to start in learning to paint them.

( While you’re on my YouTube channel, how about giving it a thumbs up, leave me a comment or subscribing to my channel so more people can learn how to paint these easy peonies, or roses.)

One of the things beginners struggle with is how much pressure to put on the brush.  The same synthetic flat brush can make very thin lines, very fat strokes, ribbons, leaves and petals depending on how much pressure is put on that brush.

In this easy peony painting for beginners you will see how pressure on the brush makes skinny, fat, and curvy petals.

The second thing many beginners struggle with is values.  Every item you paint needs a minimum of three values in order for the item to have form or shape.

I only use a warm and a cool red and white in this easy peony painting for beginners, but I create many values by adding varying amounts of white to each red and then by mixing the two reds and adding varying amounts of white to that, I get an endless amount of values.

The saying values do all the heavy lifting and color gets all the credit” could not be more true especially when painting flowers.

It wasn’t until I realized the secret sauce was how much pressure I put on the brush and creating values in each flower did my flowers start to improve.

You know I love painting thrifted items and this wood and woven tray was a favorite of mine.

I used the very same easy peony painting for beginners on this tray and I love how it turned out.

Since roses and peonies are so similar, you could actually think these flowers were roses or peonies.  Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
