Easy Family-Friendly Goat Painting

Tutorial For Beginners

This easy family-friendly goat painting tutorial for beginners is for all beginners.  Adults and children.  I think this is a perfect project to teach children how to paint even if you don’t know how to paint yourself and can easily be adapted to a homeschool setting.

This easy tutorial of a goat painting is also perfect for adults learning how to paint because you can learn so much from it.

You Will Learn:

  • How to transfer a drawing to a canvas
  • How to use a brush
  • How to create value with highlight and shadows
  • How to create form with color and value

I painted this goat painting with about 50 children and adults at Goatacqua in Vevay, Indiana this past weekend.  This is one of the two paintings everyone had a choice to paint.  This was the most popular of the two.  Painters also had the choice of painting on a square or a rectangular canvas and square was hands down the favorite.

I had students as young as 3 up to grandmas painting goats.  This was during Goataucqua in Vevay, IN.  Fred the Goat was a famous goat around Vevay as he wouldn’t stay home and wandered around town visiting people.  He had a favorite place to hang out and could be seen on Vevay Hill all the time.  The barn or pasture life was not for him.  It’s fitting he has his own festival.

Other events included many other crafts that were all free to create, a goat parade, goat yoga, music and food trucks.  It was a wonderful day although the wind along the Ohio river was very strong and we struggled to keep our tents up.

Goataucqua is a fun, eclectic, family friendly event and we are trying to grow it through fun events like this.  Year round you can see about 30-40 hand decorated concrete goats lining the streets in front of homes and shops.  Vevay pays homage to Fred the goat every day of the year.

Vevay, Indiana is a small town on the Ohio River and not only does it have the Fred the Goat event, it also has a wine festival in August and Sleepy Hollow Days in September.  Click HERE to see events going on in and near Vevay, Indiana.
