Creating Form
Anytime you paint anything, you are probably trying to give it form or depth. Something that looks 3D on a 2D surface. It is done, not with smoke and mirrors but with highlights and shadows. If your artwork looks flat, this post should be very helpful for you.
There are several basic reasons your artwork looks flat:
- You don’t have enough values in your work
- You haven’t created shadows
- You haven’t created highlights
- You haven’t seated your subject on it’s surface. (Your subject is floating)
