Color Temperature Demystified

For Beginners

There is a lot to learn about color theory and temperature is one of them.  Color temperature demystified for beginners is the goal of this video and blog post   Let’s get into it.

Color temperature is not about chroma or color.  It is about the warmth or coolness the color projects.  In the video you will see a demonstration of cool and warm, yellows, reds and greens.  You will also see how they are affected sitting next to each other and when they are mixed together.

Color temperature can be very confusing so I hope you watched the video and understood the examples.

One reason it can be confusing is nearly every color has a warm and a cool, so if you think of yellow as a warm color you would be both right and wrong.  In the video I showed a lemon yellow which is cool and a cadmium yellow medium which is a warm yellow.

It’s extremely helpful for you to take all your paints and create a chart putting all your yellows together, oranges, reds, greens, blues and any other colors you have and determine if they are warm or cool.  Make sure to mark your swatches so you know what color they are and if they are warm or cool.

Rules of Color For Perspective

Things in the background are:

  • cooler
  • duller
  • and have less detail

Things in the foreground are:

  • warmer
  • brighter
  • have have more detail
