The Holidays Are Coming
And this tutorial can help you get ready. In this video you will learn how to paint this wreath and how to give it and the bow depth.
The thing about giving something depth in a painting is always in the values. Values are shades of a color and all subjects need a minimum of 3 values to achieve depth or perspective. I totally lost count of how many values are in this wreath, but that’s what gives it such a full look.
Another way to achieve that full look in this wreath is to make the strokes of the wreath go in different directions. The strokes cross each other so it fills out the wreath. They also get a little shorter with each pass around.
I started this wreath with the darkest color in the first pass through and I also didn’t start at one side and go around to the other. I sort of hopped around shaping the wreath as I went. To me, if I hop around the shape is better than if I start at one point and go around to the other side. It’s an interesting phenomenon.
Giving the bow shape by pushing hard on the brush and then lifting up to the very edge of the brush definitely has a learning curve, but once you feel it in your hand, you’ll be able to do it with ease. Get out a practice piece of paper, some freezer paper works well and with any color available just take your synthetic flat brush load the paint, and then push down hard as you make a stroke, then lift the brush releasing the pressure and change directions without lifting the brush from the paper. You don’t have to try to make a bow here, just learn what it feels like in your hand. You’re creating muscle memory. Keep saying to yourself, push, lift, turn, less pressure, then push again. It will make more sense the more you practice.
You can paint this holiday wreath on water paper greeting cards, tags, as a painting on water color paper, on canvas, metal, wood, just about anything. Have fun with it and I know you’re going to create some beautiful works of art for you and others.
