Beyond Van Gogh in Louisville Kentucky
Sometime back in January or so I saw that the Beyond Van Gogh experience, (I hate to call it a show) was coming to Louisville, Ky. I got on online and bought tickets for July 6, 10:15. I was amazed that they had it down to the minute where you could go in.
The show is approximately an hour but no one asked you to leave so you could make it as long as you wanted. We stayed for not quite 2 complete rounds.
I invited my friend Sarah Beach (@sarahbeachlikethocean on Instagram). She has helped me immeasurably with my website, straightening me out when I had things gubered up. She has helped me plan how to get the Beginner’s Painting Club up and running and out into the world and all sorts of other tech things. I thought this might be a great retreat for the both of us.
We started out with the gigantic portrait of Vincent Van Gogh where a super employee took our photo.
Vincent and his brother Theo, had a very special relationship and Theo was always looking out for Vincent regardless of Vincents behavior. The family had become frustrated with Vincents erratic lifestyle and behavior but Theo was always loyal to Vincent. They wrote letters back and forth and the next room had these letters project up on screens. They were sad, they were beautiful, they were enllightening.
Next we went into what was called the waterfall room. It got our eyes ready for the show that was really coming. It had all sorts of parts of VanGogh’s paintings that they manipulated to dance across the walls and the floors changing shapes all the while.
Upon leaving the waterfall room, we entered what we would learn was the magical creation of whoever thought this up and the artist Vincent Van Gogh. The room was bound on all four sides by connected floor to ceiling screens that had to be at least 20 feet tall. In the middle of the room were several screens that were approximately 8 feet across and the height as the wall screens that were like triangular pillars. As we walked into this main room on all the walls and the pillars were sketches done by Van Gogh. (This will make more sense when you watch the video.). Not only were there sketches, but they were moving. It was almost as if he were there actually drawing the sketches. I’m telling you whoever thought up the show and those who executed it were absolute geniuses.
I created this video for you to step into the experience for a few minutes. My hope is that if you can, you will go if it is in your area and if you can’t, this video will give you a sense of what it was like. It was truly heart and soul changing.
