The Pearl Paint Video You Didn’t Know You Needed
Pearl paints are a unique and captivating medium, and in my latest video, I walk you through exactly how to mix them using Amsterdam’s stunning line of pearl colors. This is The Pearl Paint Video You Didn’t Know You Needed and if you’ve ever wondered how to bring iridescence and depth into your artwork—or why your pearl paints look white in the tube—this tutorial is for you.
In this video, I create a color chart that showcases the interaction between 6 pearl paints and 9 standard colors from my regular palette. It’s a fantastic reference for any artist who wants to better understand how pearl paints behave when mixed and layered.

One of the trickiest (but also most exciting) aspects of working with pearl paint is their deceptive appearance in the tube. At first glance, each color appears white, but when you view it at an angle, the hidden hue reveals itself. It’s the weirdest paint I’ve ever played with.
Here’s what you’ll learn in the video:
-
How to mix pearl paints properly
-
Why cleaning your brush between mixes is absolutely essential to maintain color purity and avoid muddying the effect.
-
The best layout for a color chart, and where to place your mixes for easy comparison and reference.
-
How pearl paints interact with warm, cool, and neutral tones, and how to use those interactions to your creative advantage.
I didn’t know what I was expecting, but the final chart showed very subtle differences in the colors. There are differences but they are very subtle, but when the paint dries you can see the iridescent shimmer.
If you’ve been curious about how to actually see what your pearl paints are doing—and how to avoid wasting them in trial and error—this video will save you tons of time and paint. Yes it is rather tedious but it really is the only way to know exactly how paints react to each other.
