What is a Triad Color Palette
There is always more to be learned about color. How it works. How it plays with other colors. What it can and cannot do. Artists of 20-30 years are always learning about color. I guess that means, “we’ll never learn it all”!
But here’s a lesson that I learned it, changed my art and took the worry out of picking colors for my artwork. Having said that, this is also a lesson that is extremely helpful in home decorating or selecting brand colors that pop.
If you don’t have a color wheel click HERE to see several different sizes and prices.
Here’s the video I created about this method. Go ahead and give it a look and I’ll see you on the other side.
On the color wheel, regardless of the color, colors that are directly opposite each other are complements. When used next to each other, complements pop, but when mixed together they mute each other and do what is called grays the color.
Now pick a color you want to use as the main color of your next painting. Then select its complement. Next, pick 2 colors equal distance on either side of your main color or your complement. I usually pick 2 colors on either side of my main color.
Those will be the main colors of my artwork. The main color is the star, the complement and the two colors selected are the supporting actors. You can use other colors in your art as you wish but they will be the extras, used in a very limited way.
Next week I’ll be creating a video that shows paintings I’ve completed using this theory. Because this theory works so completely, it takes all the guesswork out of picking colors for my art that is pleasing to the eye.
If you’re an entrepreneur trying to pick colors for your brand, this works extremely well and it also works in home decor in selecting accent colors to go with your main color.
