3 Things To Stop Doing . . .

3 Things To Stop Doing. . .

Learning to paint is not always about learning new things.  Sometimes it’s about stop doing things that are holding you back.  Here are 3 things to stop doing.

The Three Things Are. . .

  1.  Stop thinking you have no talent
  2. Stop watching more than 1 or 2 painting videos per week
  3. Stop thinking you have to have the best supplies and a dedicated place to paint.

Let’s Unpack that further.

Stop thinking You Have No Talent

Mindset is critical to learn anything and learning to paint is no different.  It’s not about how much talent you have, it’s a skill.  You can learn a skill, you can practice a skill and you can improve on a skill.

Even the most talented artists practice and try to improve with every painting.  They are always trying different techniques and tools so they can improve their work.

Most artists start a painting session with a warm up exercise, just like a golfer going to the driving range or the putting green before and after a game.

Stop Watching More Than 1 or 2 Painting Videos A Week

Watching videos can give you information, but they cannot make you improve.  There’s only one way to improve your painting skills and that is to paint.  If you want to learn and to get better you have to paint, not watch someone else paint.

Yes, it can be inspiring and satisfying to watch someone else paint, but it can’t make you a better artist.  Only you putting in the work can make you a better artist.

I make videos and I’m saying that.  YouTube would love to have you watching hour after hour of videos, but their goal is to make money on ads.  Your goal is to learn to paint and improve your skills.  The two don’t mesh up.

Stop Thinking You Need The Best Supplies and A Dedicated Space

You do NOT!  You need a brush or two in different sizes, 4 tubes of paint:

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Blue
  • White

You need something to paint on and it could be the shiny side of freezer paper, water color paper, the back of a page from a desk calendar. Grandma Moses started painting on cardboard.

Buy a $1.25 plastic table cloth at the Dollar Tree and cover your kitchen table and go for it.

Your paint should be student grade paint.  You don’t need the best or most expensive paint when you are learning how to use a brush.  Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels all carry student grade paint that is about $6 per tube.

My newest brush was $2.69 and I love it.  Click that big beautiful button below to go to my resource page.  You can shop there or check out your local store to see what they have.  (I can’t recommend $ Tree paint however).

I have a FREE resource that will be valuable for you.  It’s a printable workbook on changing the artist mindset.  It has questions you can answer on what stops you from painting, what would you like to paint and so much more.  You will explore your thoughts and limiting beliefs you have about yourself and your ability to paint.

It also has a 30 day planning calendar where you can make your own art goals and how and when you’re going to accomplish them as well as if you did accomplish them.  If you work the plan for 30 days you will have created some great habits that will serve you well on your art journey.

This workbook is a no-brainer.   It’s FREE and it’s printable.

YES! I Want It!
